Mid-Mester at TFS

The Mid-Mester Experience is a signature component of the fall semester at Tallulah Falls School, offering students in grades 9–12 the chance to engage in dynamic, week-long, grade-level trips. These immersive experiences are intentionally designed to expand learning beyond the classroom, fostering curiosity, leadership, collaboration, and a deeper understanding of the real world.

Whether exploring historic landmarks, engaging in service projects, or discovering new cultures and environments, students gain invaluable perspectives and forge lasting memories.

For Midmester, I was able to go to Costa Rica. One of the places that we visited was a local school where the children were actually celebrating their Independence Day, so we got to watch their performances.

It's—it's so much fun. It's a nice break from the traditional in-classroom learning. You get to get to know some of your peers better through the adventures you're going on. You get to go hike around and just see America, and it's a lot of fun. I love it.

Midmester, I went job shadowing. I job-shadowed a real estate photographer. Responsibilities of making sure the shoot looked correct, I had to clean cameras, and I had to record professional videos for like Instagram, Facebook, TikTok. And it just helped anything he needed me to do.

I do—I did the water miniature and the environment, about test water quality. We learn about how to determine what tree is, and we do pH like, pH in the water, and we go a creek, and we step into. It's really interesting, actually. And how oxygen in the water, how turbidity like, yeah.

Midmester is a different experience for everyone. Whether you'd like to go to college tours or you want to go on a trip, it's kind of a choose-your-own-adventure. I'd definitely say the most meaningful Midmester trip has been the New York and Philadelphia trip that I just went on. I feel like New York's just a one-of-a-kind place. It's nothing like anything I've ever been to, and it was just awesome to see how it was there.

My Midmester experience, I went to the Savannah location of SCAD, the Savannah College of Art and Design. We went through a lot of the buildings of the campus itself. We went through the business building, the fashion and arts design, the industrial design and architecture buildings.

Midmester, I took a few classes, but one of the ones I really liked was a refurbishing class. I learned specifically about myself that I really like painting and being creative. The life skills that I will take from that is how to specifically refurbish and redo specific pieces so that like in the future I won't have to get it, I don't have to pay to do it, I'll just have the skill to do it myself.

Midmester, I went to Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons. One part that stood out to me is we got to go rafting on the Snake River in Jackson Hole, and that was a lot of fun because, you know, everybody's in the raft, rapids are everywhere, and you all have to coordinate as a group, and you know, it helps build a connection with your fellow students when you're doing that in the moment.

The whole experience impacted me because being able to see the different country and the different people, how they lived, how they traveled, their daily life, was extremely just eye-opening. I was very grateful to be able to see that. It was very different from what we have here.

Oh, it's a really fun trip. We go like the space, and we go to a car race. It's really fun, and we see a lot of sea animals. Like we made new friends, we knew some teachers that I don't have their courses.

It helped me see what the actual college life was all about and what I actually want to pursue later in life, and if maybe a creative degree was for me.

I learned how to manage your own time, like working for yourself as a business owner. I learned skills like how to shoot videos, photography, how to use a drone, just how to do the small things people don't really think about when you own your own business.

To prepare me for the future, I want to go to UGA, and they have a study abroad program that's required. And this is helping, you know, see some of the places outside of the classroom where I could be going around and learning.

Midmester is a very exciting opportunity, and I think that the most important thing is that you check the itineraries and you check all of your options and make sure that you choose the one that you would enjoy most and is most beneficial to you.
